A few of our members met online recently to discuss authentic e-learning. Each person came from a different educational sector and had different contexts in which they worked.
Very close to the beginning of the session Kat raised the question 'how do you define the term authentic'. This was a really good question. How can you define authentic e-learning without a clear definition for authentic?
Gail pointed the group to a book she had recently purchased and was in the process of reading 'A guide to authentic e-learning' by Jan Herrington, Thomas, C Reeves and Ron Oliver'. Although no one in the group felt they were an expert the conversation was structured around several key points in the book to guide them through a professional conversation.
In the end the group agreed that ' in order to have a clear understanding of authentic e-learning' you must have a good understanding of authentic learning. To make this clearer the conversation turned to 'What is an authentic task?', 'What is an authentic assessment?' and 'How does this change when you bring in technology?'.
